Fedorov, a 35-year-old tech-savvy modernizer, wants to be reinstated as defence minister to implement his ambitious plan for modernizing and reforming Ukraine's army. The protests, led by prominent veteran Dmytro Koziatynsky, suggest that Ukraine's political crisis is likely to roll into a second week. The situation is further complicated by the generational conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi, a 60-year-old Soviet-trained traditionalist. The protests, which call for Fedorov's reinstatement, have been joined by Ukrainian unmanned systems forces, who have carried out a series of long and mid-range strikes on Russian territory. The attacks, which have targeted oil refineries and military depots, as well as ships and oil tankers in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea, are part of an ongoing campaign to cripple Russia's economy. The appointment of Drapatyi, a formidable opponent with a strong anti-Russian sentiment, has been met with approval by many, including Ukraine's former president Petro Poroshenko. However, the Kremlin has stated that Drapatyi's appointment will not alter the situation on the frontline, and Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that Moscow has no intention of stopping its full-scale offensive. The crisis in Ukraine's military leadership raises deeper questions about the balance between tradition and modernization in the country's defense strategy.
